NY Police & Fire
Widows & Children’s Benefit Fund

The Courtyard LaGuardia is proud to be working in conjunction with the NY Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund known as Answer the Call. They are a non-profit organization that Hotels for Hope is partnered with and they have reached out to us to ask for your consideration of their upcoming campaign.  The Courtyard LaGuardia will be distributing feather tattoos to all guests staying at the hotel.  These tattoos are in remembrance of those we lost on 9/11 and in the line of duty.

About Answer the Call

Answer the call was founded in 1985 by former NY Mets’ player Daniel J. “Rusty” Staub.  The fund is dedicated to providing financial assistance and a network of support to the families of NYC First Responders (NYPD Officers, PAPD Officers, FDNY Firefighters, and FDNY EMS Workers) killed in the line of duty.  They do this by providing $25,000 immediately after a line of duty death and then continuing to provide the widow or widower with an annual stipend for the rest of his or her life.  This year the annual stipend will be $6,000.  This year alone the organization will distribute over $4 million and will help approximately 600 families.  In addition to financial support, they host events for their families throughout the year to give them an opportunity to come together to cope and connect.  We invite you to watch a brief video about the organization.

Marking the 15th Anniversary of 9/11

About half of the families this organization serves lost their loved one in the September 11th attacks.  On that day, NYC lost over 400 first responders who put the safety of others before their own.  As such, September 11th is a very difficult day for their organization.  Nelson Mandela once said, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.  The brave then is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."  15 years ago, the first responders were courage personified.  These men and women were not immune to fear, but they overcame it in order to help save others. As we approach the 15-year anniversary of this tragic day, The Benefit Fund is reaching out to the NYC community and asking them to join them as we keep the promise to "Never Forget".

To Raise Awareness: Last year The Benefit Fund started a Feather of Remembrance campaign, where they asked supporters to wear their temporary feather tattoo to show their respect for all those we lost on September 11th as well as for those we've lost in the line of duty both before and after that date.  Watch the slideshow from some of the photos that were shared. Hotels for Hope will be supporting The Benefit Fund by wearing the feather tattoo and sharing it on social media, we are hoping that your hotel would be interested in doing the same and/or passing the tattoos out to guests.  The Benefit Fund would provide all of the feathers free of charge. Please contact them if you have any questions or are interested in making the promise to never forget and would like to be sent the tattoos.
